Validation Workshop: HipCity Presents Informal Market Design Report

The Validation Workshop for Informal Market Design Report was held on August 29, 2024, with the Abuja Women Coalition, facilitator Dr. Stephan Ajadi, and the HipCity team in attendance.

The primary objective of the validation meeting was to present the designed informal market for low-income earners, taking into account their reactions and recommendations, and ultimately produce a more comprehensive document.

Dr. Ajadi presented a circular market design showcasing, essential facilities such as market stalls, storage, restrooms, security post, waste collection post, and market management. The gated market design also incorporated solar panels on each market stall. Bello Oluwayinka, a staff member of the Development Control, welcomed the market design developed by HipCity and emphasized the need for optimal maintenance of the market facility.

The women participants expressed their concerns and recommendations, including worries about government support, dedicated spaces for vegetable waste collection, shelter from rain, and inclusivity. Dr. Ajadi addressed these concerns, emphasizing women-led advocacy, inclusivity, and gender-sensitive facilities.

Key recommendations included incorporating a central shade, designating a composite pit for waste management, redesigning the market for cooking and grilling businesses, and including a drainage system and central cold room.

Next steps involve incorporating all recommendations into a comprehensive market design model, Abuja women coalition forming a strong advisory group in collaboration with NITP to support ongoing conversations with government bodies, and empowering women to own the project and drive the conversation.
